Flat Car Battery — What It Means and How a Battery Boost Helps
A flat car battery is the most common reason a vehicle refuses to start. This page explains what has actually happened, why a flat battery and a dead battery are not the same thing, and what a mobile battery boost can and cannot do about it.
Flat, dead, or something else entirely
Four different conditions produce almost identical symptoms at the key. Knowing which one you have determines whether a boost is a solution or a postponement.
A flat battery
The battery is discharged but fundamentally sound. Something drained it — a light left on, a series of short journeys, a long spell parked, or cold weather taking the edge off its output. Put charge back in and it behaves normally again.
A dead car battery
The battery has failed internally and will no longer hold a useful charge. It may accept a boost and start the engine once, then be flat again within hours. Charging cannot fix a cell that has gone.
A battery that is not being recharged
The battery is fine but the charging system is not replacing what the engine uses. Symptoms look identical from the driver's seat, which is why repeated boosting without investigation is a poor strategy.
A connection problem
Corroded, loose or dirty terminals can stop a perfectly healthy battery delivering current. It presents exactly like a flat battery, and it is one of the first things worth checking at the vehicle.

Ordinary situations that leave a battery flat
The causes above are the categories. In practice, it's usually one everyday moment that tips a battery over the edge.
The interior light left on overnight
A door not quite latched, or a light manually switched on and forgotten, can be enough on its own. Interior lights draw less than headlights, but overnight is a long time.
A boot left slightly ajar
A boot catch that doesn't fully engage keeps the boot light on for hours without anyone noticing, especially on cars where the boot light isn't easily visible from the driver's seat.
Short winter commutes
A ten-minute drive to the station and back, twice a day, through a cold snap. Heated seats, screens and lights are all drawing current while the alternator barely gets started on replacing it.
Two weeks parked at an airport
Even with everything switched off, modern cars draw a small standing current for alarms, keyless entry and control modules. Two or three weeks of that, especially in cold weather, can be enough to leave a battery unable to start the engine.
A dashcam wired to run in parking mode
A hardwired dashcam set to record while parked is a genuine, continuous draw on the battery. It's a common and often overlooked cause of a car that won't start after sitting for a day or two.
Aftermarket alarms and trackers
Alarms, trackers and other accessories wired to a permanent live can draw more than the vehicle was designed to tolerate when parked, particularly if fitted or wired incorrectly.
Cold weather makes all of these worse rather than causing them outright. Low temperatures reduce a battery's chemical output at the same time as they thicken engine oil, so a battery that coped through autumn on a modest reserve can fail outright on the first proper cold snap — even though nothing about the car has obviously changed.

A boost can get a car running when the battery is simply discharged, or top up enough charge to prove a suspected fault one way or another. It cannot repair a battery that has failed internally, fix a charging system that isn't replacing what the engine uses, or resolve a starter, fuel or ignition fault — those need looking at by a garage.

- Either something is drawing current while the vehicle is parked, or the battery no longer holds charge. Both need investigating properly — repeatedly boosting a battery that flattens overnight only postpones the problem.
