A single click and nothing else
One click when the key is turned, with no attempt to crank, often accompanies a battery that no longer has enough power to drive the starter.
Newport, South Wales
Newport is a city of two halves either side of the Usk, wrapped around a motorway that runs through tunnels at its northern edge and a distributor road that sweeps along its southern side. A flat battery here might be found in a terraced street in Maindee, on a works site near Llanwern or in a multi-storey off Kingsway — and in each case the vehicle is attended where it stands.
Coming to the vehicle is almost always quicker than trying to move a car that will not start.
Whether the car is on a driveway in Bassaleg or in a bay at Newport Retail Park, the first step is pinning down exactly where it is standing and whether there is room to bring another vehicle alongside. Newport's centre has a one-way system and pedestrianised sections, so a jump start there is usually carried out from a car park or a permitted street nearby. Prices begin at £50, with the final amount shaped by the vehicle, the access and the circumstances. There is more detail on our car jump start page.
The service runs around the clock, including overnight and at weekends.
A vehicle that will not restart after a late shift at one of the eastern industrial sites, or on a dark street off Chepstow Road, is a different situation from one sitting safely on a driveway. Get yourself somewhere sensible first, then get in touch — our emergency jump start page explains what to do while help is arranged. If the vehicle has stopped on the M4 itself, in the Brynglas Tunnels or on the SDR, please read our motorway guidance first, because those are not places a jump start can be attempted.
Terraced streets and rear parking courts make an accurate description of the location especially valuable.
East of the river, much of Newport is closely built with limited off-street parking, so a car with a flat battery is often boxed in on both sides. Where a vehicle cannot be reached directly, the practical options are discussed with you rather than assumed. Our flat battery page covers what typically drains a battery and what to expect once the engine is running again. A jump start is a boost to get the vehicle going.
Commercial vehicles are covered alongside cars.
Newport's distribution and logistics presence along the SDR and out towards Llanwern means plenty of vans and light commercials, and a battery that will not turn a larger engine can stop a working day before it starts. Both 12V and 24V systems are catered for. Our van jump start page covers what differs with a bigger vehicle and what information helps in advance.
Some signs often accompany a flat or weak battery, though the underlying cause is not something established on-site.
One click when the key is turned, with no attempt to crank, often accompanies a battery that no longer has enough power to drive the starter.
Enough charge for lights, radio and dash displays does not mean enough for the starter motor, which draws far more current.
If the engine turns over sluggishly instead of briskly, that may suggest a weak or partly discharged battery, particularly after a cold night on an exposed street.
A vehicle left at a station car park, on a driveway in Rogerstone or on a works site at Llanwern for several days can lose enough charge to need a boost.
If the problem returns within a day or two of a successful start, that is worth having looked at by a garage rather than treating repeated jump starts as a solution.
Each of those is covered in more depth on our car won't start page.
Home, work, retail park or roadside, the vehicle is attended where it is.
The shape of Newport — a compact centre, big estates to the west and east, industrial land along the Levels and a motorway squeezed through tunnels to the north — means a flat battery can turn up in very different settings within a few miles of each other. A mobile service suits that: nothing needs to be moved or towed before the attempt is made, provided the location itself is safe to work in.
A few local patterns worth flagging.
Newport is a commuter city with fast rail links east and west, and vehicles left at or near the station for several days can be found without enough charge to start when their owner returns.
Around Llanwern, Queen's Hill and the docks estates, commercial vehicles can sit idle over a weekend or a shutdown period. A van that has stood in the cold often needs a boost before it will turn over.
A pattern of very short journeys between the centre, the retail parks and home gives the alternator little chance to put charge back, which is a common background to a battery that eventually will not start the engine.
Streets on the slopes above the M4 tunnels are steep and often heavily parked. If the vehicle is on a gradient, please say so — it changes how the vehicle needs to be secured before anything else happens.
What tends to matter in each part of the city. Availability is always confirmed against the postcode.
Newport's central shopping streets sit inside a one-way system that funnels traffic around Kingsway and Usk Way, so the practical starting point for a jump start is usually a multi-storey such as Kingsway or Friars Walk rather than the pedestrianised stretch itself. Knowing the car park name, level and bay number saves a good deal of time.
East of the Usk, Maindee is a tightly built area of Victorian terraces where most parking is on-street and cars can be nose-to-tail on both kerbs. It helps to say which side of the street the vehicle is on and whether there is space for another vehicle to pull alongside.
Both are large post-war housing estates with cul-de-sacs, courtyard parking and shared bays. Duffryn also sits close to the Celtic Manor side of the city and the retail sheds off the A48, so it mixes residential parking with visitor traffic.
The eastern edge of Newport around the former steelworks site is dominated by industrial units, distribution yards and access roads controlled by site security. Gate procedures and site permits matter more here than distance, so mention them when you get in touch.
North of the city along the Usk, Caerleon has narrow historic streets around the Roman remains and a campus-related parking pattern. Some lanes are tight for a service vehicle, and the nearest usable space may be a short walk from the property.
Suburban western Newport, with newer estates, driveways and a commuter rail station at Rogerstone. Vehicles left at the station through a working day are a familiar setting for a battery found flat at the end of it.
Large surface car parks around the retail park and leisure village are among the easiest places in the city to work in, with plenty of space to bring a vehicle alongside. The main variable is telling us which unit or entrance you are nearest.
Eastern residential districts with a mix of estate roads, grass verges and rear parking courts. Access is generally straightforward, though a courtyard behind a terrace can be easy to describe wrongly, so a postcode plus a landmark is useful.
Local geography changes how a location is best described.
The Usk crossings and the M4 tunnels are the two features most likely to affect how long a journey across the city takes at busy times, which is one reason arrival times cannot be promised locally. If your vehicle is stopped on a fast road rather than a city street, see our motorway guidance before anything else.
A short note about the location often removes most of the guesswork.
A starting price, not a fixed one.
Jump starts begin at £50. What moves the figure is usually practical: whether it is a car or a larger van, how accessible the vehicle is, the time of day and the specific circumstances of the job.
A start is a start, not a repair.
Where it is practical and safe, a longer drive — the run out along the A48 or up the A4042, for example — gives the alternator a better chance to put charge back than a short hop across the city. If the same vehicle needs boosting repeatedly, have it looked at properly at a garage.
